Ophthalmologist – specialist services

Ostania aktualizacja 7 March 2023

Ophthalmologist – specialist services. Or the sake of health, you should perform specialist periodic medical examinations to enable you to diagnose the patient’s state of health. Many patients focus only on laboratory tests, but ad hoc studies are equally important, including the patient’s skeletal system, hearing or sight. With age, the functioning of the human body begins to fail. This applies to, among others eyes. Many patients diagnose their vision worsening much too late on their own. In this situation, it is important for the ophthalmologist to conduct specialist eye tests to eliminate the ailments that have arisen.

Specialist eye examinations

Optics and optometry are areas in which specialized ophthalmological tests are carried out. Only a well-conducted examination can detect a vision defect. The diagnosis of vision consists in conducting basic and additional tests. The ophthalmologist usually conducts tests based on the patient’s environmental history. It is during the interview that the ophthalmologist decides whether it is enough to conduct basic tests or whether additional tests should be performed. Basic eye tests include:

  • eye examination using specialized computer equipment – this is a precise examination enabling the assessment of corneal curvature, and thus the vision defect. This type of examination will prevent accurate selection of glasses due to the fact that this is a general examination that the ophthalmologist uses to detect vision defects.
  • measurement of pressure inside the eye – examination using a tonometer. The ophthalmologist, through automatic devices, supplies a portion of air to the patient’s eye in such a way that the air hits the cornea to deform it. The test aims to detect if the patient’s eye has been hypertensive.
  • visual acuity test – it is the most popular method of eye test consisting in reading letters and recognizing shapes from an array. To be considered correct, the patient should read 10 rows of letters or pictures on the board.
  • examination of the entire eyeball – this is a precise examination carried out by a biomicroscope. The ophthalmologist verifies the eye in stages. The first part of the eye consisting of the cornea and the lens is evaluated first. During the examination, an ophthalmologist can examine the fundus by using an additional lens mounted in the slit lamp. This stage of the examination allows the verification of the state of the retina of the eye. The fundus examination allows to diagnose not only eye diseases, but also other diseases, such as atherosclerosis or diabetes.

After basic tests, an ophthalmologist may find it appropriate to perform additional eye tests. Additional tests include:

  • determination of the field of view – this is a test to verify the sensitivity of the optic nerve. The verification is carried out on the basis of light stimuli. The ophthalmologist brings light of varying intensity to the patient’s eye, after which he verifies the correctness of the test subject’s response. If the patient has a weak optic nerve, then low light intensity may not be visible to him. The right response will be shown only in strong light.
  • visual examination of the eyeball – is an innovative technique for examining eye tissue cross sections, which allows the detection of even hardly recognizable eye defects and diseases of the body, including degenerative changes.
  • orbital examination – involves diagnosing what is happening behind the eye through ultrasound examination.

Choosing an eye doctor for your child

A child’s eye test is a new situation for a toddler who can effectively obstruct the test by preventing a proper diagnosis of the eye condition. A children’s ophthalmologist should have pedagogical skills, which is related to the right approach to the child. The course of the examination should encourage the child to visit further. This is especially important if your child’s eyesight condition requires the use of glasses. The scope and methods of examinations are also an important factor when choosing an ophthalmologist. The most important thing is to correctly diagnose the child’s vision, which may not be possible without specialized diagnostic devices. The ophthalmology office should have modern equipment adapted to conducting specialist eye tests in children.

What is the selection of glasses?

The need to wear glasses permanently can be difficult to accept for both a child and an adult. If the ophthalmologist diagnoses a defect that requires wearing glasses, the extent of the vision defect should be assessed first. The next step is the selection of glasses for the glasses. An ophthalmologist determines the scope of short- or far-sightedness based on the tests carried out. The glass is made by a specialist ophthalmic office, in which it is necessary to order previously adapted eyeglass frames. The first glasses should be as light as possible for the user. Their selection is particularly important in the case of small children who can quickly become discouraged from wearing glasses when the frame is not properly adjusted, e.g. as a result of oppression or continuous sliding.
